Annual Upgaard Trail Hike

I have come to really love our annual Fall hike on the Upgaard Trail in Crosslake, MN. We started this tradition with Soren as a 10 month old, carried in the baby backpack carrier. Now we can barely keep up with the boys as Soren navigates with the trail map and we try to find new paths to explore.

Apple Picking

Both boys had apple orchard field trips with their schools this Fall. Soren's was at the Minnesota Harvest Apple Orchard and Sevi's was on the grounds of Dodge Nature Center.

We even found a apple orchard up at the cottage in Jenkins, MN named Red Barn Orchard.

Dodge Annual Campout

With Sevi attending Dodge this year we were able to partake in the annual Fall camp out. This year the Capistrant family joined us and we had a great time running around, taking pictures, roasting marshmallows and trying to stay warm when the temps dipped to the 20's in the evening.

Best buds from Dodge: Tommy, Sevi, Joey and Soren

Picture time - note to self: don't let kids chew bright blue gum when trying to take pictures!

Thanks to Andy Capistrant we got a awesome family pic for our holiday card.

Baker Family Visit

In the Spring of 2009, while at an Artist Residency in Ireland, we meet the most amazing family from Maine, the Bakers. We have stayed connected and were so thrilled to have them come visit us here in MN. Their trip was based on Sarah (the mom) running the Twin Cities Marathon. We spent a wonderful afternoon hiking in Minnehaha Falls, eating dinner, reminiscing about Ireland, and then cheering Sarah on at the race.

How does your garden grow?

After removing our maple tree, our backyard turned into a full sun landscape. We built two 4'x4' vegetable boxes and planted tomatoes, lettuce, snap peas, beans, peppers and carrots. The boys were most excited about the carrots and we are pleased with our success.  Already we are planning for the planting season next summer.

Our First Hospital Stay

Sevi gave us quite the scare when he ended up in the ER and a two night hospital stay in the ICU due to breathing issues. Ends up he had the Enterovirus that has been going around the Midwest, mostly affecting kids who are prone to wheezing episodes when they have a cold.  Sevi has yet to be diagnosed with Asthma, but certainly has the signs when his breathing gets very labored when he is fighting a cold. He had to be on the nebulizer for oxygen for the first 24 hours, then would receive steroid treatments every 2, 3, then four hours until his breathing could stabilize on its own. He was a champ, never fusing even though he was confined to his room the entire time. He did love having 24 hour access to a TV that was in arms reach. That fact made Soren rather jealous, leaving him the impression that hospitals are all about watching movies all day. In the discharge review, no one mentioned how hard it would be to wean the TV demand once we got home! The staff at University of MN Childrens Hospital were wonderful and we were in good hands. Sevi loved having family visitors, Gramma Anne, Gramma Nancy and Grandpa Henry, Sister Liz and of course Papa and Soren.

Skateboard Dudes

We dug out the 1970's skateboard from Gramma Anne's house and tested it in the back alley. They weren't too impressed and the skateboard has been sitting in the garage since.

Back to School

Soren is now in Grade 2!!!
He is excited to be back at New City Charter School with his same grade 1/2 teacher from last year, Ms Kalli.

We are thrilled that Sevi will be attending his last year of Preschool at Dodge Nature Preschool. This is the sculpture in the front of the building and a popular photo spot. In fact, I have the Same picture of Soren from three years ago.
Here is Sevi's classroom, the great outdoors. He is on the boardwalk that connects the school to the farm. It really is as amazing as it looks.
